Afternoon,

I promised I'd send you the pdf of the photo of Alex that has gone into the RICS Wales Spring Bulletin. I've also attached the obituary that Phil Roberts wrote and that will appear- the Bulletin is at print at the minute and I'll send some copies in the post when we it's delivered.

I attended the funeral of Nicola Hooper yesterday, she too passed away with cancer recently, she was 40 and worked for Torfaen County Council so another sad loss. She was a devoted single mum to Harriet, aged 9 and was a work experience schoolgirl when I was at the Valuation Office in Pontypridd in the mid 1980's.

I hope the obituary shows the appreciation felt for Alex's life, and I've popped a personal cheque in the post to help with your fund raising.

Best wishes.

Winner of the Wales Insider Property Personality of the Year 2008

ALEX LOCKE

It is with great sadness I report the passing of Alex Locke at the tender age of 38. From her home in Milo in West Wales, Alex went to London and Kingston Universities, where she studied Geography and Estate Management.

Joining Grwp Gwalia in 1993, she quickly established herself as an invaluable member of our development team. Her skill, single minded determination, and innate ability, made her indispensable. In 1998 Alex, left to work in a senior development role at Taff Housing Association, but returned to Grwp Gwalia in 2001 as our Land Manager; it felt like she had never left. When in 2003, she decided to pursue other business interests, with her husband Simon; she went with our best wishes, but also left an indelible mark. For us, her legacy includes many of our very best housing schemes, which she ably conceived and delivered.

Her delightful and charming personality, often lead hard nosed negotiators to reduce their expectations on land value, with many, wrongly having imagined she was ‘too nice’ to negotiate. Beneath that charm was a steely resolve that made you glad she was on your team.

A true professional in every sense, her values put fairness, equity and honesty, at the heart of all she did and she was loved and respected by all who worked with her.

There are times in life when one simply cannot understand why bad things happen to the best of people; for me, this is one of them. I cannot begin to imagine how her husband, three young children and family, must feel at their loss; for she was indeed a gem.

So terribly sad that Alex was called by God so early, leaving such a terrific, energetic young family. Abiding memories concentrate upon the fact that Alex never ever had a bad word to say about anybody else. A rare trait. Our prayers have been with her for the last six months with weekly updates from my parents - Alex's aunty and uncle - and they continue to include Alex. We can take some comfort in the absolute conviction that she is in a far better place, with God in heaven. Our sincere and heartfelt condolences to the Locke and Coles family.

I would like to echo and repeat the thoughts and comments left by everyone who knew you, Alex. I first met you in form one when the only thing we had to worry about was whether to like 'Hair cut one Hundred' or 'Kajagoogoo'. I have fond memories of staying in the caravan at your house and our weekly Saturday shopping trips to Swansea, we could fly to France quicker today than the time it took that Rees and Williams bus to travel to Swansea! One Saturday saw us take a trip to Llanelli pictures, we were embarrassed to find a group of 14 year old boys from Tregib were already there, we did our best to ignore them but I don't think even you would have predicted being happily married to one of them! 1984 saw us going on a fantastic school skiing trip to Italy, I can remember you and Michelle singing and dancing to Cyndi Lauper's 'Girls just wanna have fun' and Madonna's 'Holiday', we all found the skiing quite easy but the cable cars proved to be a bigger problem, we would sit 3 to a car to go up the mountain but we hadn't quite mastered the art of getting off! we would hold onto each other, jump, invariably fall and usually take out everyone else within 5ft of the lift! The ice skating was unforgettable also, not only did we all have to try our best to stay upright but some of the boys in their wisdom had decided to overdo the underage drinking, we spent the afternoon trying to keep one boy ( he shall remain nameless!) on his feet and hidden from the teachers in charge. One shopping trip saw us venture to Bristol, we ice skated, shopped (of course!)and went to the pictures to see 'back to the future', unfortunately we had to leave before the end of the film to catch the bus home, I never did find out what happened at the end! In 1985 we briefly joined Carmarthen Harriers, you being such a fast and strong sprinter, but we talked more than we trained! By form 5 we were ready to party, civic discos, lager in the White Lion, parties in Paradise, Sands and Chequers, a big part of our 'growing up'. 6th form brought countless 18th parties and a suitcase full of memories. I remember your first Volkswagen, Penny would co drive you while you ferried the rest of us, you were never fazed or nervous even though your volkswagen would stall every time you stopped at a junction! We celebrated finishing school by taking a trip to infamous Magaluf, what a terrific, fun packed holiday that was! Free drink was on offer for anyone who could win in party swimming games, it goes without saying, nobody stood a chance against you, man or woman! your swimming outclasssed them all and we had the hangovers to prove it! Although college, marriage and subsequent children saw us go our different ways our paths have crossed many times over the years, from various hen nights, recycling and shopping at tesco, watching swans at the Liberty stadium and following the welsh rugby in the Millenium to our occassional chats in Sugar and Spice. I'll always remember your kindness, sincerity and gentleness as well as your genuine smile and zest for life and laughter, thanks for the memories, rest in peace Alex. Jane xx

Nobody really calls me Josephine, but Alex. She was like a mini-mum to me, a loyal friend, and a beacon of hope. Lovely Alex, I shall miss your wonderful smiling face, and your infectious laughter, 'Well...what lovely teeth she has!' as Grandma used to say. You made me laugh so much when I was a kid, I wet myself on at least two occassions.

You loved everybody, and had so much love and energy to give, and so much crazy dancing, and you were great FUN! When you walked into a room, heads would turn, you were beautiful. You used this to your advantage a couple of times, you had that thing where you twiddled your hair and everyone would melt and nod. But you were understated, compassionate, utterly kind and would alway put others before yourself, and you were always on the look out for danger (for others).

For as long as I can remember, you wanted to be a mum, even when you were really young. You loved kids, and you spoilt me rotten. Thank you for the Transformers in Disguise you bought me with your pocket money, for dressing me up as James Dean and flamenco dancing, wrapping me up in a duvet and slinging me off the bed over and over again when it was well past bedtime, and taking me off horseriding on Jamie, and later, trying to get me out jogging (I wasn't as fit as you). And the drawing, you were so good at sketching, and geography... I copied one of your projects for GCSE... and I got an A.

When you were pregnant with Joe, you got everything in order, right from the booties to the books, you had been waiting for that moment your entire life, and it didn't let you down. You were a wonderful mum, the best mum ever, with so much energy. You made life so entertaining, like a fantastic never-ending game, and childless old me, sat there exhausted even watching you. You wanted everybody to be happy, especially Si, Joe, Meg and Ella, and you made sure they were. Thank you for the good times, for letting me jabber on at you, for having me as your bridesmaid, for encouraging me, for love. I will miss you, lovely Alex. I am forever in your debt. I met Al around 15 years ago, in London. Her and Sime were on their way back from the USA and on their way to Wales with a stop over with us. What a great start to a friendship. When Rod and I moved back to Wales, Simon and Al were a serious part of our 'adjustment' and I loved staying in Swansea, going to Bizzy Lizzies and the beaches.

Alex had style, taste, brains, beauty, inner stength, the ability to really empathise, and of course, most importantly, loved her family unconditionally.

She was a great friend to me at times of crisis, as well as great fun in times of joy. She was an early visitor at the maternity ward when I had my first son and continued to be a part of all the major events in my life.

I have so many treasured memories of Al, as we all have and this tribute opportunity is a wonderful way to share how we all felt about Alex as well as making sure that Jo, Megs and Ella will be able to read them in the future.

Great days on the beach, kayaking, swimming and bbq's to end the day with sundowners at our garden will be our warmest and treasured memories...

...Mr. Coles has said previously that there was a rumour surrounding Alex's prowess and ability to drink men under the table, I have to confess that after a Police concert in Cardiff earlier this year I was to be found close to the underside of one such table, closely followed by Simon & Rod Treharne...whilst Alex, Tina & Tess continued to party the night away!! Obviously the boys must have had bad pasties!!

Sime, Jo, Meg & Ella we look forward to continuing the Pembs experiences taking comfort in the knowledge that Alex will be looking down and smiling her big smile as she always did.

I read this some months back and so thought of Alex. I first met her many years back through my sister and she soon became a friend of the family - how could you not open your heart and home to Alex, she really was a true angel. She so longed to be a mother as she had so much love to give, she has done this 3 times over and her beautiful children are her legacy - Simon is very lucky and hope this brings him and the rest of the family strength in years to come as he watches them grow .

"By the time the Lord made woman, He was into his sixth day of working overtime. An angel appeared and said, 'Why are you spending so much time on this one?' And the Lord answered, 'Have you seen my spec sheet on her? She has to be completely washable, but not plastic, have over 200 movable parts, all replaceable and able to run on diet coke and leftovers, have a lap that can hold four children at one time, have a kiss that can cure anything from a scraped knee to a broken heart
and she will do everything with only two hands.'

The angel was astounded at the requirements. 'Only two hands!? No way!
And that's just on the standard model? That's too much work for one day. Wait until tomorrow to finish.' But I won't,' the Lord protested.
'I am so close to finishing this creation that is so close to my own heart. She already heals herself when she is sick AND can work 18 hour days.'

The angel moved closer and touched the woman. 'But you have made her so soft, Lord.' 'She is soft,' the Lord agreed, 'but I have also made her tough. You have no idea what she can endure or accomplish.' 'Will she be able to think?', asked the angel. The Lord replied, 'Not only will she be able to think, she will be able to reason and negotiate.'

The angel then noticed something, and reaching out, touched the woman's cheek. 'Oops, it looks like you have a leak in this model. I told you that you were trying to put too much into this one.' 'That's not a leak, 'the Lord corrected, 'that's a tear!' 'What's the tear for?' the angel asked.

The Lord said, 'The tear is her way of expressing her joy, her sorrow, her pain, her disappointment, her love, her loneliness, her grief and her pride.' The angel was impressed. 'You are a genius, Lord.
You thought of everything! Woman is truly amazing.'

And she is! Women have strengths that amaze men. They bear hardships and they carry burdens, but they hold happiness, love and joy. They smile when they want to scream. They sing when they want to cry. They cry when they are happy and laugh when they are nervous. They fight for what they believe in. They stand up to injustice. They don't take 'no' for an answer when they believe there is a better solution.
They go without so their family can have. They go to the doctor with a frightened friend. They love unconditionally. They cry when their children excel and cheer when their friends get awards. They are happy when they hear about a birth or a wedding. Their hearts break when a friend dies. They grieve at the loss of a family member,
yet they are strong when they think there is no strength left.
They know that a hug and a kiss can heal a broken heart. Women come in all shapes, sizes and colors. They'll drive, fly, walk, run or e mail you to show how much they care about you. The heart of a woman is what makes the world keep turning. They bring joy, hope and love. They have compassion and ideals. They give moral support to their family and friends.

Will miss you forever - sleep peacefully Alex. x

Morning again Roger and once more thanks for all your sound advice and support. We think its very appropriate that you are speaking our behalf ,given your knowledge of our family background and the high regard we have for you and Jenny.

Alex
Born Mt Pleasant Hosp Swansea 1969 (just over the hill from Cwmdonkin and Dylan,s birthplace)
Lived on Gower until 3 yr old before moving to Salem, attended Salem C.P. school
Moved to Pantllyn farm and attended Nantygroes cp Milo at age of 6
She also studied at Tregib Comp,London Uni and Kingston Uni and had a degree in Estate Management and subsequently qualified as a Chartered Surveyor.
Her professional career started within Gwalia Housing (and her first project was one you also worked on ,some other news of my family of which I was unaware)she then moved to Taff Housing in Cardiff as a manager ,and subsequently returned to Gwalia in Swansea as a Development Manager.
She gave up her Professional work with the retirement of Cae and Derek to take over their Family business,"Sugar and Spice" in Ammanford.,and work on some other business interests of hers and Simon.

Alex was self deprecating, but in reality was a high achiever, with a quiet determination to succeed at whatever she attempted. She was riding her own horse "Jamie"from the age of 3 ,who unbeknown to us when we bought him turned out to be a stallion and it took us 6 months to find this out ,after he did a bit of business on a neighbouring mare. During this period Alex a 3 yr old was able to cope with this feisty little Shetland on family rides and subsequently became a good horse woman. She was a good netball player and Swimmer and completed her Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award exercise in the Black Mountains in blizzard conditions when a number of the party gave up due to the extreme weather. She should have known this would be tough as Penny had completed her sail training on the "Tall Ships "the year before during the hurricane that blew down most of the trees on the South Coast I am told that when she was interested she could "drink the boys under the table"She was surprisingly strong for her size as Penny and Rich will verify. She showed early prowess as a business woman as,when they all had sweets she would save hers and then barter them with Rich and Penny in order to gain favours and get something better..

The family are very grateful for the support and kindness shown to us by the community and friends during this difficult period. We particularly wish to thank Dr Jill Tarr and Gary their friend and neighbours and Andy Thomas and Rob Leonard for their humanity expertise and guidance during this time Since finding out the nature of Alex problem we have been in contact with medical people at the forefront of some brilliant work in many parts of the world ,in an effort to help Alex overcome this dreadful disease. However in the opinion Andy and Prof Leonard eminent medical people with international reputations, the treatment Alex received from Gill, and the other doctors and nurses in our Llandeilo Surgery, and Prof Wagstaff and his team in Singleton Hosp, could not have been bettered anywhere ,which is some comfort to us as a family. Because of this medical care and Alex's incredible courage and spirit we gained a further 6 months of quality life for Alex and the family and her death was made calm and serene due to the consideration and professionalism of this outstanding group of people

We would like any donations to be made out to Alex Locke Charity fund which we have set up to help some orphans in India who have been praying day and night to help Alex overcome her illness(mention the story of Sues Donation if you think it appropriate) and some other childrens and cancer charities
.Thank you

We would get together with our children and meet for lunch at each-others houses. I remember Alex saying how she couldn't cook, then produced delicious lunches!
Latterly we would meet up in Gellu Aur or Dinefwr Park and go for a walk with the children. We were amazed by how well Alex looked, you could have almost believed she wasn't ill at all; she was always positive and a joy to be with. A truly remarkable woman in every way. Some of us have met for lunch since Alex has died, but there is a gaping hole now - knowing that she's not going to pop her beautiful smiling face through the door to join us. From the early years in Tregib when she tried to teach me to play squash, which even Alex had to admitt was a folly as I'm not built for speed! To the Barn parties, statutory sixth form bashes and the fortnight we spent in Magaluf's Tokyo Joe's (Where it was Free to get in 'n Free to get out!) That was a holiday and a half, I will never forget the laughter as she attempted to bandage Michelle's eye with a serviette after a rogue drumstick had hit her.
Although our paths drifted I will always remember her as an integral part of my "growing up" . My only regret wouyld be that the letter I wrote and re-wrote to her so many times after hearing of her illness was never posted, so she never got to know how much I thought of her. How can one smile such sweet smiles,
When one is so saddened by sorrows for miles,
How can I smile the same smiles,
When life brings me nothing but tears,
I wondered for so long,
What reason you had to smile that long,
To keep smiling though troubles come,
And still remain sweet and silently overcome,
It's such a mystery to me,
Your smiles from heaven with glee,
I adore and yet envy thee,
But I'd rather you smile those at me,
I feel happy when I see you smile,
Even if I'm sad and lonely,
Your smiles bring me somewhere,
I don't even know where,
But it was you,
You gave me the reason to smile,
To smile with no reason,
To smile for a smile,
I guess life is just like that,
We need not a reason to smile,
For a smile is the reason itself,
To rejoice and open-heartedly give thanks,
I learned to smile because of you,
Because your smiles bring me joy when blue,
It proves how well and powerful,
A simple sweet smile can become so beautiful,
Smile for the sake of a smile,
Smile for the sake of happiness,
Smile for the sake of life,
Smile because of hope left in life,
Smile my friends,
Smile for me my Love,
Smile those same sweet smiles,
Smile so the world can be a peaceful dove...

I even found myself believing in that magical world where nothing bad ever happens and everyone is always smiling, happy and at peace.

May some comfort be drawn for Sime, the children , her family and friends that she's now in that magical kingdom.

We have just been given the heartbreaking news about Alex. Both Briony and I shared our school years with Alex. I joined the Army after leaving school and unfortunately have not seen Alex for at least 10 years. Though, my fondest memories are of having the privilege of her friendship. Being able to drop in from our farm across the field for a chat was brilliant and the Barn parties were just the best! It is our regret that we never got to know Alex more than our school friendship. Our thoughts and sympathy are with you all at this time.

I never actually met Alex but I spoke to her on the phone and via e-mail since her diagnosis. I felt deeply for her, she remained in my heart and I thought about her often. I admired her positivity and courage in the face of such a profound challenge. I am so sorry that I never got to actually meet Alex. I trust this little poem will bring some comfort to all her friends and family.

COME TO ME
God saw you getting tired
And a cure was not to be
So he put His arms around you
And whispered "Come to Me"
With tearful eyes we watched you
And saw you pass away
Although we loved you dearly
We could not make you stay
A golden heart stopped beating
Hard working hands at rest
God broke our hearts to prove to us
He only takes the best"

I remember Simon 's wedding speech when he said 'for those of you who know Alex, today you know that I have married an angel.' At the time I couldn't think of a more deserving description of Alex, she was most certainly an angel. She would always be smiling. I think she was one of the kindest people I have ever had the honour to know. She was most certainly beautiful on the outside but also on the inside.
Simon, I hope you find strength in your memories of a wonderful wife and mother. You only have to look at your children to see that she will live on forever.
Our heartfelt sympathy to Simon and family.

Twenty seven years ago to this month, on the first day of secondary school (Tre Gib), in the English classroom on the second floor I looked across the room and saw a beautiful eleven year old girl. I asked her if she’d like to sit next to me………. Alex I’m so glad you said yes as this was the start of our beautiful friendship.
Alex my special special friend what can I say, where do I begin. You were a vision of natural beauty and were uniquely beautiful inside and out. You had an aura about you and all that met you will understand this. Alex my best friend I always felt warm in your presence and being with you was such a tonic. It’s unbearable to think that I will never see you again, you touched my heart and soul like no other and the huge gap in my heart will never be refilled.
The following quote is taken from the first conversation, on the phone, between Alex and myself just after she was diagnosed, it sums up how Alex as the most caring person I have ever met always put others first, even during this most devastating time.
“Don’t worry come round tomorrow and I’ll give you a hug”
Alex had a huge passion for life that was so cruelly taken away from her.
I will cherish forever the vast amount of extremely fond memories I have of us as young girls growing up to becoming mothers ourselves.
My love and thoughts are with Sime, Jo, Megan, Ella, John, Sue, Penny and family, Richard and family and the Locke’s and they will continue to be with them forever.

Alex was a friend since 6th form Tregib. We frequented the pubs of Llandeilo most weekends! A memory that always comes back to me is of Alex driving the lane up to Milo from Llandybie at about 5mph....there was a frog crossing! We spent ages trying to dodge the frogs and she got ever so upset if we squished one.....that was Alex, she cared about everything and everyone and nothing was ever too much trouble. I think she is the smiliest person I ever met and as so many people comment, she really did light up the room. Alex, my brother Adrian & I share birthdays on 24th & 25th Nov so I will be remembering Alex each year on these dates. I just can't believe she's gone and feel privileged to have known her.

The first time I met Alex was at Tre-Gib school, form 1A, her beautiful blonde hair, rosy complexion & friendly smile. We had so much fun camping in the caravan, where Alex cooked us our first 'eggy bread' & disco's in the barn!
I'm sure all her school friends are so sad that we never organised that school reunion that Alex often spoke about over the years. She'll be so sadly missed xxx

Alex was my sister in law,
a friend whom I admired and adored.
Alex was beautiful, stylish, talented and chic,
she has left us with many wonderful memories to keep.

Alex was thoughtful, considerate, selfless and kind,
she would do anything for anyone; it was never a bind.
Alex was an inspiration and brave right to the end,
she put time aside for everyone, family and friend.

Alex was a loving mum to Joe, Megan and Ella,
and through them; she will live on for ever.

For all of us left who knew Alex well,
we all have a duty to her children to tell….
….how their mummy was wonderful in every way,
and how we will think of her every single day.

Alex, I’ll miss you so very very much,
as will everyone who’s heart you have touched.

Our first visitor when we came to live in Broad Oak, some five years ago, was Alex, bearing a welcoming gift of chocolates. She took us as she found us, with the charm and kindness we always associated with her. This continued through her own building work, increasing family and ultimately her illness. She improved our lives, simply by knowing her .

We wish her peace and may the memories of a truly remarkable person be remembered and cherished. Our thoughts are with Simon. Joe, Meg and Ella. xxxxx

The photographs on this tribute capture the essence of Alex’s nature. A beautiful and wonderful person.

As a close friend of Steve & Penny I was a regular visitor to their home and to the Coles’ house. Alex had the ability to walk into a room and lift what was already a happy atmosphere. Quick to smile and with a warm welcome, her company was always a pleasure.

In this time of reflection my thoughts are with the whole family.
